German Chancellor Angela Merkel delegated Bernhard Graf von Waldersee will represent the interests of German government in Ukraine in gas transit issues. Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andriy Melnyk reported this on Twitter.

“Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel has appointed Bernhard Graf von Waldersee as the Commissioner of the German government to ensure gas transit of Ukraine,” Melnyk said.

According to him, the special envoy made his first official visit to the Ukrainian Embassy in Berlin.

Bernhard Graf von Waldersee is 67 years old. He previously worked as a German Ambassador to Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.

The future of Russian gas supplies to the European Union from 2020 raises many questions at the moment, as the current contract between Gazprom and Naftogaz of Ukraine expires on December 31. According to Bloomberg, Ukraine warned the EU of a possible gas crisis due to the absence of an agreement on the transit of Russian gas through the Ukrainian gas pipeline system.

At the same time, it is unlikely that Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will be put into service this year. Nord Stream 2 is a pipeline through which it is planned to export gas from Russia along the Baltic Sea to Germany and which, together with the TurkStream, is to become an alternative to the Ukrainian transit.

The authorities of Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia consider Nord Stream 2 a threat to Europe’s energy security.

Germany, Finland, and Sweden permitted to lay a pipeline through its territory. Denmark refused several times.

At the same time, Berlin insists that the Russian Federation continue the transit of gas to Europe through Ukraine.
