The elite branch of the Ukrainian military, Special Operations Forces celebrate their professional holiday on July 29. This is due to the presidential decree signed in July 2016. Since then, the staff celebrates the holiday annually.

Special Operations Forces are the youngest branch in the Armed Forces. Fighters are capable of completing various combat tasks such as counterterrorism operations, raids behind enemy lines and the release of prisoners.

The idea of the creation of such a service branch within the Ukrainian army has been promoted since 2007.  In 2015, the General Staff supported the offer to create such a service, which would respond directly to the Defense Ministry. The first commander of the new service was Ihor Lunyov, appointed in 2016. In May 2016, a group of 29 instructors of the Special Operations Forces graduated from the training center of the Joint multinational group (USA, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia).

Though the Special Operations Forces belong to the Armed Forces, their status is a special one. Along with the Highly Mobile Airborne Forces, they are considered separate service branches.
