The U.S. Embassy to Ukraine considers that the incident with Russian sailors detained and then released in Odesa region shows the willingness of Ukrainian authorities to fully comply with international law.

"Ukraine's handling of yesterday's ship incident suggests the new administration is focused on protecting the country’s interests not only firmly, but also in accordance with international norms and humanely. This sets a good precedent for the peaceful resolution of disputes," the Embassy said on Twitter.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained the Russian tanker in the Izmail port on July 25. The SBU claims this same tanker had blocked the Ukrainian Navy's Yany Kapu tug and Berdiansk and Nikopol armored gunboats in the Kerch Strait in November 2018. According to the SBU, the Russian owners renamed the NEYMA the Nika Spirit after the incident in the Kerch Strait.

The SBU has not recorded any violations of maritime law or Ukrainian legislation by the tanker's crew and therefore sees no reason to detain the sailors, the SBU press service told Interfax-Ukraine.

All members of the Russian tanker crew have already returned to their homes in the Krasnodar Krai.
